Our team at INMED Andes is thankful for the pregnant women who attended our recent workshop at the Aguaytía Health Center in the Ucayali region of Peru to learn about the importance of using a maternity waiting home (casa de espera) in a timely manner to prevent neonatal maternal mortality.
Too many expectant mothers in Peru have little to no access to health care. Where health care facilities do exist in the rugged country, it often takes up to 12 hours to reach them. Via our partnerships, INMED has been instrumental in establishing maternity waiting homes in the Puno and Ucayali regions. Maternity waiting homes, which are built near health posts, allow expectant mothers and their families to reside there in the last stages of pregnancy or during a high-risk pregnancy to ensure they are close to qualified obstetrical care when labor begins.
