Promoting Maternal Health in Peru

Communities in the Ucayali region of Peru recently celebrated the Day of the Unborn Child with parades and festivities. INMED Andes was on the scene with information about our maternal and child health initiatives and maternity waiting homes (casas maternas) to allow pregnant women from remote communities or facing complex deliveries to reside close to a reliable health care facility with their families. INMED, in partnership with Johnson & Johnson, regional health departments and municipal governments, has opened eight such homes over the past two years. INMED also helps train community health agents to provide critical education and monitoring at the casas maternas as well as throughout rural communities to reduce the risk of maternal and child mortality.
