Parasitic infection is one of the primary causes of anemia and malnutrition among children and youth in Peru, leading to lower attention levels and academic performance. An increasing number of regional governments have been turning to INMED Andes for help. The most recent is the regional government Piura, which has partnered with INMED to carry out a deworming campaign that will administer Vermox (mebendazole) donated by Johnson & Johnson to the 473,000 students in the municipal school system.
In March, the Regional Directorate of Health will analyze the parasite situation with a sample of students to build a baseline that will help determine how widespread the problem is. The medication will be administered in April and September and will be reinforced with preventive education for parents and school administrators.
