It takes a village of community health agents to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in Peru.

It takes a village of community health agents to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in Peru. INMED, with the support of Johnson & Johnson and local, regional and national health ministries, has trained hundreds of them to work with women in impoverished and remote regions of Peru to improve their pre- and post-natal care and provide access to resources for healthy births.

The most recent training session was presented in conjunction with the Coronel Portillo Health Network in the Ucayali Region in late December at INMED Andes’ regional office. The aim of this meeting was to train the community health agents on issues of maternal health, sexual and reproductive prevention and promotion of health and family planning. Some 25 community health agents and obstetricians participated.

The workshop was developed by the obstetricians of the health network of Coronel Portillo Regional Health Directorate Ucayali and with the technical support of INMED Andes. The workshop was part of ongoing training for the health agents receive to better serve their communities.
