International Day of World’s Indigenous People

In honor of International Day of the World’s Indigenous People today, INMED Andes is celebrating its latest fish harvest from its aquaponics system at the Bilingual Institute of Yarinacocha in Pucallpa, Peru, which trains teachers to deliver education in indigenous languages.

The fish and produce harvested from the system feeds the teachers’ children who attend the school on campus. The system is now producing surplus harvests to sell for income, such as this gamitana, a popular indigenous species that has been overfished to the point of decimating populations by 90 percent in some areas. The teachers who graduate from the institute will share their knowledge of aquaponics to improve the food security and nutrition of indigenous communities.
