Father of the Internet Visits INMED’s Opportunity Center

Students in the after-school academic enrichment program at INMED’s Family & Youth Opportunity Center recently received a gift they will never forget. Dr. Vinton G. Cerf, Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist for Google, spent more than an hour observing the Center’s many student activities—and even participated in a binary coding exercise presented by Sterling Public Library.

Dr. Cerf is widely recognized as the “Father of the Internet.” He has served in executive positions at MCI, the Corporation for National Research Initiatives and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, as well as on the faculty of Stanford University. He also has received numerous awards and commendations for his continued work on the Internet, including the US Presidential Medal of Freedom, US National Medal of Technology and the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, among many others.

“Our entire staff, students and volunteers were thrilled to spend time with Dr. Cerf,” said Opportunity Center Executive Director Cecilia Capece. “This distinguished and unassuming gentleman made himself completely accessible to the students during their activities, and he was impressed with our work at the Center and its importance to the community.”

Dr. Vinton Cerf, known as the Father of the Internet, creates a personalized bracelet using binary code with a student in INMED’s after-school academic enrichment program, featuring STEAM activities at its Opportunity Center in Sterling, VA.

“The INMED Center is a prime example of community response to young people in need of help toward educational success,” said Dr. Cerf. “It would be hard to overstate the dedication of the staff to their young charges and their families.”

Dr. Cerf’s visit provided a major showcase of the expanded STEAM enrichment activities offered at the Opportunity Center. “Our goal is to develop opportunities for at-risk children with limited resources to succeed in their personal and professional endeavors,” said Capece. “Our program activities are opening new vistas to low-income children and their families.”
